Week 4... Almost drowning... BUT keeping on STRONG!

It's Friday here already. I have only managed to respond to 2 of the tasks and 1 more to go. I need to think and plan a lesson using technology. Geezzzz... what is wrong with me??!! I've done it so many time but why am I having problem starting it?? I simply can't decide what to do and where to start!!!

There's always this questions or to be more specific, a reality, in my head! How am I going to do it when there's is no proper equipment and facilities??? Would getting students preparing powerpoint slide at home consider as using technology in the classroom?

Despite all the other 'common' problems like students' lack of interest in reading and writing, time constrain, being exam-oriented, not habit of speaking English, feeling of shame and isolation by peers when use English, English is a superior language and many more, the foremost major problem is that school are not equipped with technology, so how are teachers suppose to use technology in their teaching and learning process? When a teacher download materials from the internet and use the materials in the classroom, is this consider as using technology? Is this a technology enhanced lesson?

I don't really want to change the world but I do feel that this is a problem I can't solve as a teacher. I can only do so much to help my students and at times, I resort to conventional teaching methods as they are easier and manageable but mostly BORING!

THINK! THINK! THINK!.... What to do? What can I do?.....

  1. Aloy,
I just saw your post!! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!
I have the same problem! It's Friday morning here in Greece and I still haven't posted my lesson plan. My problem is that I want to create a "Special Day" lesson and I can't clarify the objectives and the actual materilas to be used... I am so stressed, especially when I see that the other reachers have already finished their work! But, heads up! I am sure that by tonight we will have come up with wonderful lesson plans! Keep it up!

    1. Hi Georgia....
Thank you for your encouragement. It is a relief to know that someone is with me.Don't stress yourself.Like my teachers always said, "two heads are better than one".If you have any problem with materials, perhaps we can discuss together and find solution to our problem.

  3. Aloy,

As Georgia said, you're not alone. We share the same problems and not all my lessons are interesting and technology enhanced. I do it step by step, introducing different web tools for different grades for several lessons each year and then the next year I add a couple of more and so on. I also use games a lot and when I say games I don't mean computer games, but different chalk and board or marker and board, paper and pen games. Sometimes a 5-minute activity with no resources can waken up the whole class and then although the rest of the lesson is not as interesting, they are more motivated.

    1. Marija,
My level of enthusiasm will always rise to the maximum when it comes to teaching. I always feel excited to start something new. However, this can be a major problem to me as I am prone to have too many crazy ambitious ideas that, sometimes, I am not able to find focus in most of my lesson.

You mentioned about a 5-minutes activity with no resources, can you please give me an example of what kind of actovities that I can use in class??? Thank you for the tips.

  4. Hi, Aloy

We share the same problems! I feel relief. I thought I was the only one having some difficulties this week. It' Saturday in my country and I've just finished my lesson plan. I am not satisfied, I think I could do it better. Like you, I did not know where to start. So many topics were going through my mind and didn't know what to choose. I think this happens because we all want to do our best.

    As Georgia said,heads up!

    1. Hi, Aloy The Drowning :)

I think Friday is a good time to accomplish the tasks. I've just finished mine (Saturday) and I'm proud of that :) If not, there still is Sunday...

Bojana is right saying that our problem is trying to do our best, which is hardly possible with our full-time job and family responsibilities. I know that I could do better if I had more time, so I just do what I have to and give in...

As for the activities you mentioned, I think they are good teacher-oriented enhancement of English classes. We have two options – we can use our IT skills either in class or for preparation. I think that slide shows prepared by students as well as extra material uploaded by a teacher are considered to belong to IT skills.

      Smile :)

    2. Hi Ruta,

I am ever so glad to have friends like you to always be such good support and encourgement! Thanks!

As for the activities, that is all I can do at the moment given the facilituies and time.. I hope to be able to include some of the things such as google document and wiki in my classroom in the near future.

      Have a great week ahead!!

    3. Hi Bojana,

Yes i think even if we gave our best , we would still think that we could do better.. I guess that is what makes all of us SPECIAL! Hahahaha... but really, at times I get so tired and I would ask 'why am I working so hard?'.. the answer is very very simple! Because we all care for our students and what they achieve matters to us!! So please don't give up and let's work to make it work!

  5. Hello Aloy,

So I guess we are certainly not alone! I also left this last task for today. So many ideas running through my head, but no definite one. Finally I got inspired and was able to make one, which I'll use this Monday. Fingers crossed, it'll come out well!

Regarding your questions "When a teacher download materials from the internet and use the materials in the classroom, is this consider as using technology? Is this a technology enhanced lesson?" I would say it is a technology enhanced lesson! I can understand your feelings of a bit of frustration when we don't have enough tools to work with technology. But from what I have read from your posts, you are doing a fantastic job! I am sure we'll all feel more relaxed once we are appliying all this knowledge in class, and the ideas will flow easily. Have a fab week! :)

    1. Jessica,
Yes, I guess that is one of my biggest problems.I don't simply have any idea on how to start anything.I have all sort of ideas running through my head but I don't seem to have any focus. There are times I feel like cramping everything in one lesson!!!! I must say,it can be a great lesson but it is far from practical! It is too ambitious, to begin with and i don't think that it is suitable for students in both secondary and tertiary level. One of my close friends in school even commented that my lesson is only exist in the BOX-OFFICE world!!!(OUCH!!!!!)

Thank you very much for confirmation. I always have doubt on that matter.I feel so much better.Have a wonderful week to you too :)

  6. Hi Aloy,
You feel stressed maybe means you really want to try your best to make the things better. You do the great job and really made some clues to make me thinks about technology enhanced lesson.
How does it mean to a tech-class?or a webskills class?
If we can clear the meanings the more things we can do in the class.
So I think you are right! All are about one question!
    Thank you for your posts.

    2. Dear Justin,
Last week a friend needed help to clear her "never-ending" boxes that had been cluttering her house for the pass 6 years! While I was helping her, I found that there is a box labelled "UNWANT-EES". At first, I thought the box is full of bad memories. I was quite surprise that it was full of old lecture notes. I came across an interesting article. In that article (I can't recall the title and author of the article), the author stated that QUESTIONS produce better interactions.Through questions, students are able to share their thoughts and opinion. When one posts a question in a classroom, we can be surprise the different types of views.Different people view things diferently, it is amazing to see different types of reactions towards one simple question. Let's take FACEBOOK as an example. When someone post a shoutout on his or her page, we can see loads and loads of comments from his or her friends.

This reminds me of Socrates rhetoric method. Answering a question with another question. Questions allow us to think better and at the same create some kind of interaction towards others. Do you think I can do that in my lesson????
